Dear friends and supporters of PUMA,

I've just returned from a great trip to Nepal. Padam and I were scouting new locations for furthering the work, and we are very hopeful about the opportunities that are ahead! The newest building projects and the new groups of Nepalis that we are ministering to continue to grow!

Please let us know if you are not getting our newsletter in the mail, and we'll get it out to you! To join the mailing list, call 215-750-8133 or email director@puma2000.org.

Sincerely,

Steve Simpson

Christmas Program in Serabazar and Nadi

At the recent year's Christmas event, it was celebrated as a national event in Nepal. Most of the leaders, including the prime minister and other ministers, attended a Christmas program and shared their opinions. Everybody agreed that Jesus Christ is the prince of peace and light.

Similarly, in Serabazar, Nepal the Pennsylvania United Medical Association (PUMA) also invited most of the community members and leaders to celebrate the Christmas program. About 400 people attended the program in Serabazar.

It was a very exciting Christmas program, and about six community members gave speeches on the day. Each of these people said that Christ is real and that he made the history in the world and he is considered to be the light of the world.

It was great privilege for PUMA's Field Director in Nepal, Padam Tamang, to share that Jesus was born not only for current Christians but actually for all the people of this Earth. Padam encouraged the 400 people attending to invite Jesus into their individual hearts. Many people prayed together with the PUMA team and joined the dinner.

At the program we distributed warm coats to several widows and an abandoned old man. Our guests from Georgia (three sisters) helped to distribute the coats to these elderly people.

Similarly, we celebrated Christmas in Nadi on December 24 for the people who could not go to Serabazar. There were about 30 people and it was a great witness to the outside people, because as we were singing many came to listen. They were happy to hear new songs and a message from bible.

Christmas Program at the Children's Homes

Christmas day at the children's homes was very special this year. It was everything Christmas should be about. The spirits of the children and staff were high, and we could sense in a very strong way the Holy Spirit throughout the day.

We had 100 – 150 folks come to the Christmas program. There were seekers as well as though who just wanted to be entertained and fed. It was the heart of each of us to share the truth of Christ and how the Lord in His mercy sent His only son for us.

The children did their part in the actual program as well as serving the guests, cooking the food, cleaning up after everyone, washing what seemed like never-ending dishes, and more. The children's spirits were high, and there was such joy throughout the day and into the evening. This joy was evident on the faces of the children, staff and guests. It was an amazing time in the Lord to be sure.

Some of the highlights (and there were many) included:

  • two Nepali dances — one by Samjhana Magar, Muna Thapa, Usha Rawal, Hannah Pariyar and Sarmila Pariyar; and a second dance by Laxmi Gurung and Mahima Ale Magar
  • two testimonies shared — Kuber Shahi and Bindu Lama
  • one Nepali song by Usha Rawal — she sang sweetly and was accompanied by Bir Bahadur Gurung on the guitar
  • one Christian hip hop dance to the song "Spinning around" — dancers were Samjhana Magar, Usha Rawal, Muna Thapa, Sarmila Pariyar, Ashik Karki, DeWas Rana Magar, Daniel Lama, Durga Gurung, Hari Chandra Rawal, Saroj Rana Magar, Rajan Shrestha, Dennis Tamang, Umesh Bohara, and Dante Nepali

We also prepared and performed four dramas:

  • "Redeemer" — A drama written by Youth With a Mission (YWAM) featuring Bhabindra Giri as Jesus
  • "God is God" — This drama showcased the drawing, painting and acting talents of the children. It was basically a mime with lots of acting and some art talents.
  • "Cardboard Testimonies" — In this drama, the children had prepared a piece of cardboard with a very short testimony of difficulties, challenges, problems in their lives. An example would be Manisha Gurung whose card read in Nepali, "father had gone away." On the other side of the card she wrote "but now I have a heavenly father who will never leave me."
  • "The Way of the Master" — The fourth drama was created by the children; they imitated the show by the same name that they had seen on a video. The drama was done in Nepali and it was the hit of the program. Many guests told us how they enjoyed this drama the most. There were questions asked such as "will you go to heaven?" The children imitated the responses of the people in the video (which always makes them laugh). Many people around the world believe that we get to heaven by being good. The response always being, "yes, I'm a good person." So, it was the children's task to let the audience know how we really get to heaven.

There were were two Nepali songs sung by BBG and his band "The Boaz Boys." Amith Chhetri and his band (which include Madan Shahi, Hari Chandra Rawal on drums, and Dante Nepali on bass guitar) also performed.

Then there were three English songs:

  • "A New Hallelujah" — the lead was sung by Usha Rawal and the children's choir backup
  • "Call on Jesus" — Patty Giri sang with a back-up choir as well
  • "You" — Amith Chhetri sang a song written by himself, Dante Nepali and Samuel Tamang

In conclusion, Chitra Uncle shared the word of God with the audience so that all could understand the significance of Christmas — God brough Christ into the world. He read through the scriptures, giving people verse by verse interpretation of Christ entering into this world.

I had the opportunity along with one of our boys, Damodar Regmi, to MC the day's events, and after the last portion of the program we invited anyone who had a desire to pray to come and speak to any of the adults, including Chitra, Philip, Gopal, Fran or myself. We were approached by three individuals who wanted to pray.

Huge Success at First Annual PUMA Benefit Dinner!

This past Friday night, October 9, 2009, more than 270 people attended the first annual Benefit Dinner for the Pennsylvania United Medical Association (PUMA). The dinner was a huge success as the message of PUMA was shared with many new people and a large amount of money was raised to support PUMA's mission in 2010.

Attendees of the event at the St. David's Country Club were treated to a packed evening and a delicious dinner. A special guest appearance and performance was made by violinist David Kim, Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Additionally, the keynote address was presented by Pastor Herb Lusk, senior pastor of the Greater Exodus Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA.
